ILES 4th Annual Labour Conference Officially Launched

The Institute of Labour and Employment Studies (ILES) has officially launched the 4th Annual Labour Conference, set to take place on August 21–22 in Gaborone.

This year’s event, themed “Future Ready: Labour Rights and Productivity in the Digital Revolution,” is expected to bring together a broad spectrum of stakeholders to discuss the future of work amid rapid technological change.

Speaking at the official launch held at the ILES offices this morning, CEO Shandukani Hlabano emphasised that the conference aligns with shifting global and local labour market trends driven by digital innovation. He highlighted the need for inclusive dialogue, stating that the event will serve as a platform for government, the private sector, academia, civil society, and trade unions to map out responsive policy interventions jointly.

Hlabano further underlined the importance of a tripartite approach—bringing together employers, workers, and the state—to address pressing labour challenges and craft sustainable solutions. He noted that the conference’s theme is in sync with priorities set during the recently concluded International Labour Organisation (ILO) conference held in Geneva, Switzerland.

“This platform is not just about dialogue—it’s about action. It’s about designing a labour market that is both competitive and fair, especially as we embrace the digital economy,” said Hlabano.

The upcoming conference will aim to tackle key issues such as workers’ rights in the digital age, automation’s impact on jobs, workplace productivity, and equitable access to opportunities in the evolving employment landscape.

As anticipation builds, ILES continues to call on all stakeholders to actively engage in shaping Botswana’s labour future in a way that balances technological advancement with social protection and economic inclusion.
