Botswana Vies for Glory at Davis Cup Tournament

The Botswana tennis team is vying for glory at this year’s Davis Cup tournament.

Slated for 23 July – 26 July, the tournament presents redemption time for team Botswana, which will be seeking a promotion to Group IV of the tournament. Botswana is hosting the tournament for the second time in a row and will be hoping for a good showing
following a last-minute loss against Gabon last year in the playoff.

Team Botswana, made up of Denzel Seetso, Esi Molefe, Batsomi Marobela, Tsholofelo Tsiang, Mark Nawa and Ntungamili Raguin, will be under the tutelage of Captain Phenyo Matong. Further, Raguin who is making his debut appearance in the team is expected to beef up the squad having just won a singles gold medal for Botswana at the just-ended Region 5 youth championships in Windhoek, Namibia. Moreover, the player has thus achieved extensive success winning ITF J100 championships in Egypt.

Meanwhile, Seetso and Tsiang, who are this year’s Botswana Open finalists, will beef up the local squad coming in as strong contenders. Botswana has this year opted for a larger auditorium following last year’s attendance. The championships will this year put together fifteen teams from across Africa comprising Botswana, Madagascar, Rwanda, Mozambique, Mauritania, Seychelles and Lesotho among others.

The top two teams after group playoffs will be promoted to the next level of the competition. The Davis Cup is a prestigious competition attended by nations from across the world and is widely referred to as the World Cup of tennis.
