Empowering Councils for Better Service Delivery

The Minister of Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Ketlhalefile Motshegwa, has announced a new decentralised draft policy aimed at improving public service delivery. The minister, speaking on national television this week, emphasised the ministry’s commitment to faster and more efficient services.

The policy intends to empower councils by giving them the ability to generate their own revenue, for instance, through collecting home rates. Motshegwa, who is also the Member of Parliament for Mmadinare, explained that the policy will provide a model template for councils to develop their own strategic plans. These plans will help councils generate income and create a physical decentralisation scheme that’s easy for everyone to participate in.

Additionally, the draft policy will coordinate localised operations that are relevant to the needs of the community. Motshegwa stressed that the policy’s success hinges on councils remaining free from corruption and ensuring that key players within the councils are supported to build a strong organisation.
