Governor Hails Bank’s Success At 50th Anniversary Celebrations

The Bank of Botswana(BoB) has been praised for its success in the last 50 years of its existence.

The Golden Jubilee celebrations held this morning at the Bank of Botswana offices attracted high profile individuals like the President of Botswana Advocate Duma Gideon Boko, Vice President and Minister of Finance Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe, former President Festus Mogae, former BoB Governors, corporate, and other stakeholders.

Delivering welcome remarks at the glamorous event, the BoB Governor, Cornelius Dekop, seized the momemt to hail the bank for its role in national development. Dekop stated that the bank has evolved in the last 50 years. Dekop noted that since being established in July 1975, the bank has been able to physically reach Batswana from all walks of life through public education, engagement with media, and overall participation in the economy. He said that despite challenges, the bank has achieved its core mandate.

He highlighted that some of these functions include price stability through monetary policy, managing currency, managing forex reserves, providing payment oversight, and implementing and reforming the exchange rate policy, among others. He added that all this has been achieved with great resolve.

Further, he indicated that with time, the bank’s mandate expanded to include licensing banks and supervision of digital banks as well as credit bureau. However, he mentioned that the bank invested in heavy infrastructure, becoming the most highly digitised public institution.
Dekop confidently noted: “There is no other public institution at our level. We are (the) first in class.”

According to the Governor, the institution achieved all its success by being a High Performance Organisation with great Information and Technology (IT) infrastructure.
