Direct Cattle Purchase Scheme Promises a Fairer Deal for Ngamiland Farmers

The Botswana Meat Commission (BMC) is charting an ambitious new course for the national beef sector, launching a Direct Purchase Scheme (DPS) pilot in Ngamiland that represents a significant and long-awaited structural shift. This initiative moves beyond traditional market dynamics, enabling the BMC to purchase cattle directly from farmers under a progressive Live Buy Model, aiming to enhance efficiency and equity across the supply chain.

Revolutionising the Beef Value Chain

The DPS is not merely an operational change; it is a strategic recalibration of the country’s cattle marketing system. By establishing approved collection points and procuring cattle directly, the BMC is committed to ensuring fair pricing and quicker payments for producers. This streamlined approach, supported by essential logistical assistance, is explicitly designed to empower local farmers and reduce the structural barriers that have historically complicated livestock sales.

A cornerstone of this commitment to the producer is the guaranteed purchase price of P16.00 per kilogram of live cattle. Furthermore, the scheme introduces additional incentives for those operating through private quarantines, rewarding farmers who invest in best practices for animal health and quality control. This targeted approach seeks to foster a transparent, efficient, and farmer-friendly environment, ultimately reinforcing the robustness of the entire national beef value chain.

Official Launch and Industry Impact

This pivotal moment is scheduled for official recognition on October 27 in Makalamabedi, Ngamiland District. The initiative will be formally launched by the Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Dr. Edwin Dikoloti, underscoring the government’s support for this market transformation.

The success of the Ngamiland pilot will serve as a crucial test case for potential nationwide expansion. Industry analysts view the DPS as a powerful mechanism to bypass intermediaries, ensuring that a greater share of the profit margin directly benefits the hardworking producers who are the backbone of Botswana’s beef heritage. This move signals a resolute effort by the BMC to modernise its operations and ensure the economic sustainability of one of the nation’s most vital sectors.

The implementation of the Direct Purchase Scheme marks a tangible step towards fulfilling the long-held industry aspiration of creating a more equitable and efficient market for Botswana’s cattle farmers.
