Education is being redefined in Botswana, with a comprehensive overhaul aimed at preparing students for the 21st-century economy. President Boko declared that the government is transforming the education system by adopting a STEAM-driven curriculum through the General Curriculum and Assessment Framework (GECAF). This framework, which focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics, is designed to produce a globally competitive workforce, foster innovation, and anchor economic transformation. Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is prioritised as a key driver for job creation.
The new curriculum will be implemented in the January 2026 academic year, covering everything from Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) to Senior Secondary School. To ensure success, the government is prioritising teacher empowerment and infrastructure transformation. Teachers will be upskilled and re-trained to deliver the integrated STEAM approach effectively, while infrastructure will be upgraded to expand digital access, create smart classrooms, and establish STEAM laboratories. The government is backing this effort by securing a loan from the World Bank amounting to USD 104.4 million (approximately P1.4 billion) for essential projects, including the refurbishment of schools, strengthening training and support to teachers, establishing the student learning management system, promoting ECCD, and supporting out-of-school children and youth.
The President also noted that cost efficiency measures are being implemented, with maintenance of unused and underutilised facilities to be done through TVET students. In a move to strengthen inclusive education, the construction of the Maun Centre for Children with Severe and Profound Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities has been completed, a landmark initiative ensuring that “every learner, regardless of ability, can access quality education.” Finally, progress is being made on the backlog eradication programme, with 12 new primary schools under construction.
