Mabogo Dinku Trust Holds Successful Debates

Staff Writer

The Mabogo Dinku Trust has been lauded for hosting a series of successful public debates aimed at promoting critical thinking, civic engagement and informed dialogue among students.

Held last week in Gaborone, the debates brought together students from across the African continent, including, among others, Zimbabwe and Tanzania, to deliberate on topical social, economic and governance issues affecting Botswana.

Participants engaged in lively but respectful exchanges, demonstrating strong research skills, confidence and a deep understanding of national affairs.

Speaking at the event themed: “Positioning debate and public speaking at the crux of future education,” Mabogo Dinku Trust Patron, McGeoff Phalalo hailed the event a success, saying that it promises to be even better next time.

Phalalo reaffirmed the primacy of public speaking skills to the cognitive ability of students and stressed the need for more platforms like this one, where young people can be engaged and nurtured as future leaders.

The debates proved to be useful in forming part of the organisation’s broader mission to nurture leadership, sharpen communication skills and encourage active citizenship, particularly among the youth.

“These debates are not just about winning arguments, but about learning to listen, analyse issues critically and articulate ideas clearly,” said Phalalo. “We were encouraged by the level of participation and the quality of discourse displayed.”

Adjudicators and invited guests praised the initiative, noting that platforms of this nature are vital in strengthening Botswana’s democratic culture and preparing young people for leadership roles in various sectors.

Participants also expressed appreciation for the opportunity, saying the debates enhanced their confidence, broadened their perspectives and fostered networks among like-minded peers.

Following the success of the event, the Mabogo Dinku Trust announced plans to expand the debates to other communities and schools, with the aim of reaching more young people and sustaining a culture of constructive dialogue nationwide.
