A Track Record of Excellence
Dr. Tapela is no stranger to driving meaningful, life-saving change. Her distinguished career beautifully bridges the gap between frontline clinical practice and high-level, global strategic leadership. In her earlier work within Botswana, she served as a Consultant Physician at Princess Marina Hospital and brilliantly led the Ministry’s Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) Programme from 2014 to 2018. During this time, she championed the country’s first multisectoral NCD strategy and advanced the decentralization of critical WHO-aligned diabetes and hypertension services.
Her profound global impact is equally impressive. She has served as the Director of the NCD Programme at Partners In Health in Rwanda, where she played a pivotal role in developing the pioneering Butaro Cancer Centre of Excellence. Most recently, she brought her expertise to the World Health Organization (WHO) Headquarters, consulting on global monitoring standards and digital solutions designed to strengthen quality improvement, planning, and accountability for chronic diseases. Backing this vast experience is a world-class education; she holds both medical (MD) and public health (MPH) degrees from Harvard University and serves as an Associate Fellow at the University of Oxford’s Green Templeton College.

Dr. Tapela assumes her responsibilities as Accounting Officer at a truly pivotal and exciting moment for Botswana. The nation is currently undertaking far-reaching reforms to strengthen the health system, most notably the highly anticipated National Health Insurance reform. With her deep understanding of value-based transformation and evidence-based policy, Dr. Tapela is perfectly positioned to guide these initiatives to success.
