BNF Marks Historic 60th Anniversary Congress in Palapye

The Botswana National Front (BNF) held a landmark 60th National Congress from July 20th to 22nd, 2025, in Palapye—its first ever while in government.

The historic gathering, themed “An Epoch of Organisational Unity,” signified a pivotal shift for the party, which has evolved from a long-standing opposition movement into a governing force under the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) coalition.

The event brought together delegates, supporters, and dignitaries, both local and international. In attendance were representatives from South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the African National Congress (ANC), alongside trade unions and regional political allies—underscoring the party’s growing regional and ideological influence.

President Advocate Duma Boko, addressing the congress in his dual role as BNF President and President of the Republic of Botswana, highlighted the gravity of the moment. “This is uncharted territory not only for the BNF but for the nation,” he said. “Never before has a BNF president addressed congress while serving as head of state.”

He urged delegates to carry their new status with integrity, noting that BNF members are now national representatives. “Let us walk with integrity, humility, kindness, gentleness, and warmth,” Boko implored, calling for conduct that reflects both party values and the dignity of government office.

Turning to national matters, President Boko offered a candid assessment of the country’s economic status. He cited a sharp decline in diamond revenues as a critical challenge, describing it as “both a blessing and a curse”—a crisis that demands immediate action but also offers a chance to break from past complacency.

Despite these constraints, Boko said the government was making significant strides. He pointed to key initiatives such as:an increase in old-age pensions, the rollout of the Bonno Housing Scheme, and improved allowances for students in technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions.

He also committed to raising tertiary education allowances to P2,500 once fiscal conditions improve, reinforcing his government’s focus on social equity and youth development.

On governance, Boko stressed the importance of institutional reform and digitisation across public service sectors. He said attracting investment in infrastructure—particularly roads—remains a core priority and that modernising government operations is central to delivering efficient services.

As new Central Committee members took office, the congress concluded with a unified message: the BNF must now match its revolutionary legacy with responsible governance. The party, once a voice from the political margins, now holds the reins of power—and its mandate is clear.

With Palapye as the backdrop to this transformative moment, the BNF redefined itself not just as a movement but as a governing institution tasked with building a better Botswana.
