Swedish CEO Hails Botswana’s Industrial Hemp Vision

The Chief Executive Officer of Swedish company Hemp Innovations, Clas Dahlen, has described Botswana’s move to embrace industrial hemp as a visionary step that could unlock vast economic and environmental opportunities for the country.

Speaking virtually during the Pula Investment Conference recently, Dahlen commended the Botswana government’s intention to integrate industrial hemp into its agricultural and industrial strategies, saying the initiative has the potential to transform multiple sectors of the economy.

He noted that hemp production could significantly boost Botswana’s ability to manufacture textiles, wellness products, and protein-rich foods. “Industrial hemp will heighten Botswana’s potential to produce high-value economic and sustainable agricultural products,” he said.

Dahlen highlighted that Botswana’s favourable agricultural conditions could amplify the benefits of hemp cultivation, particularly its ability to regenerate soil and capture carbon. “Botswana has a high proportion of agricultural benefits that could be achieved through hemp’s ability to regenerate soil and carbon sequestration,” he said.

The Hemp Innovations CEO further pointed to the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Hemp Innovations, the Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC), and the Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (BUAN) as a milestone that will help strengthen the country’s agricultural and research capacity.

He expressed optimism that the partnership would position Botswana as a global leader in sustainable agricultural innovation. “One may ask why industrial hemp,” Dahlen remarked, “but we know it is the most versatile crop — we can make over fifty thousand bio-products from it. Industrial hemp needs no pesticides and requires less water than most crops, which also enhances soil quality.”

Dahlen also emphasised the job creation potential of the initiative, stating that with proper research and implementation, the collaboration could generate employment opportunities for both men and women. “This will further help address Botswana’s key economic challenges,” he added.

The growing global shift toward sustainable production, he said, presents Botswana with a unique chance to diversify its economy beyond mining and position itself as a regional hub for green innovation.
