Ruling UDC Flips Moreomaoto Ward: Gov’t Consolidates Power as BDP Support Collapses

The ruling Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) has strengthened its grip on the Boteti West constituency, claiming a decisive victory in the Moreomaoto polling district bye-election. The victory sees the governing party wrestle the ward from the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP), signalling that the UDC’s momentum from the 2024 General Elections shows no signs of slowing.

The Returning Officer confirmed the results late Saturday, announcing that the UDC candidate, Mr. Mpaphi Dikaelo, secured 189 votes to defeat his closest challenger from the Botswana Congress Party (BCP), who garnered 143 votes. The BDP, now the official opposition in the ward, trailed in a distant third place with 108 votes.

The election was characterised by an exceptionally high voter turnout of 86.4%, with 471 of the 545 registered voters casting their ballots. Independent candidates struggled to make an impact, with Mr. Poloko receiving 16 votes and Mr. Sonda finishing with 14. Notably, the electorate demonstrated a high level of civic education, with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) recording only one rejected ballot.

A Vote of Confidence: The Numbers Breakdown

A comparative analysis between this bye-election and the 2024 General Elections reveals a stark reversal of fortunes for the BDP and a solid vote of confidence for the ruling UDC.

In the 2024 General Elections, the BDP held the ward comfortably with 217 votes. Saturday’s result represents a catastrophic collapse for the former ruling party, which lost 109 votes—essentially halving its support base in just over a year.

Conversely, the UDC demonstrated resilience and growth. Having secured 185 votes in the general election, the ruling party managed to increase its tally to 189. Flipping a seat from the opposition during a bye-election is often seen as a strong endorsement of a sitting government’s performance.

Meanwhile, the Botswana Congress Party (BCP) emerged as the primary beneficiary of the BDP’s decline. The party nearly tripled its support, surging from a mere 50 votes in 2024 to 143. While they did not win the seat, their growth suggests the opposition landscape in the ward is shifting away from the BDP and towards the BCP.

A Signal of Change

Political analysts will likely view the Moreomaoto result as a bellwether for the constituency’s mood. Bye-elections historically suffer from voter apathy, yet Moreomaoto defied this trend, with valid votes rising from 459 in 2024 to 470 in 2025.

The increased turnout, coupled with the BDP’s relegation to third place, suggests that the electorate remains highly motivated and supportive of the political shift that began in 2024. On the ground the support for the Umbrella for Democratic Change remains strong and visible.
