No Electricity Tariff Hike Yet for 2026/27, Says BERA

The Botswana Energy Regulatory Authority (BERA) has dismissed widespread reports claiming that electricity tariffs for the 2026/27 financial year have already been increased by 46%, clarifying that no such decision has been made.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Authority said it is still in the process of assessing a tariff application submitted by the Botswana Power Corporation (BPC). The application relates to proposed electricity pricing for the upcoming financial year.

BERA noted that misinformation, particularly circulating on social media platforms, had created confusion among consumers regarding a supposed steep hike in electricity costs. However, the regulator emphasized that the review process remains ongoing and no determination has been reached.

“The public is informed that a decision has not yet been taken on the tariff application by BPC for the 2026/27 financial year,” the Authority said. It added that the evaluation is being conducted with careful consideration of stakeholder submissions made during a public hearing held on February 10, 2026.The regulator further assured the public that any official decision on electricity tariffs will be communicated through its formal channels once the review process is complete.

BERA Chief Executive Officer, Dr Never Tshabang, urged members of the public to rely on verified information sources and avoid spreading unconfirmed reports that may cause unnecessary concern.Consumers seeking further clarification have been encouraged to contact the Authority directly through its official communication platforms.
