Boko Hails Botswana–Lesotho Ties at Maseru State Banquet

Botswana President Advocate Duma Boko has reaffirmed Botswana’s commitment to strengthening ties with Lesotho, highlighting the countries’ shared development ambitions and regional aspirations.

These remarks were made on Tuesday night at a prestigious State Banquet held in his honour by His Majesty King Letsie III at the Royal Palace in Maseru.

The event formed part of President Boko’s ongoing three-day working visit to Lesotho, aimed at cementing diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two Southern African nations.

In his keynote address at the banquet, President Boko expressed heartfelt gratitude to King Letsie III, Prime Minister Sam Matekane, and the Basotho people for the warm hospitality extended to his delegation.

“This partnership is not just ceremonial—it is anchored in shared values, mutual respect, and a common vision for inclusive development,” President Boko stated.

He underscored the importance of the newly signed Bi-National Commission of Cooperation between Botswana and Lesotho, describing it as a strategic platform for enhancing bilateral relations across key sectors.

President Boko outlined several priority areas under the new framework, including:Trade and investment, Infrastructure and energy cooperation, Water resource management, Agriculture and food security, Education and skills exchange, and Regional peace and security.

He noted that these sectors reflect not only Botswana and Lesotho’s shared national priorities but also align with broader Southern African Development Community (SADC) goals.

The banquet was marked by cultural displays and diplomatic exchanges. President Boko paid tribute to Lesotho’s rich cultural heritage and the leadership of King Letsie III.

“Lesotho stands as a symbol of resilience and tradition in our region. It is an honour to stand beside a nation so steeped in pride, culture, and vision,” Boko added.

Earlier in the day, President Boko had toured the Ha Tikoe Industrial Park in Maseru, reinforcing interest in cross-border industrial investment and job creation. He also participated in the signing of the Bi-National Commission agreement, which will formalise annual dialogue and cooperation between the two nations.

President Boko’s visit to Lesotho, which runs until 17 July, is expected to yield further progress in technical cooperation and border coordination. The visit signals a renewed spirit of unity and purpose among Southern African states.
